This position will initially report to the SVP & Chief Underwriting Office at BrickStreet and will work full-time in one of the following offices ? Charleston, WV, Pittsburgh, PA, Naperville, IL or Columbus, Ohio. The Senior Large Account Commercial Underwriter will take a lead role in establishing underwriting guidelines for risk selection, coverage determination, product development, program design, and pricing approaches for commercial automobile, general liability, and commercial umbrella lines of business. Responsibilities include implementing and managing effective pricing and underwriting strategies, developing and negotiating price, coverage, terms and conditions for all new business and renewals while coordinating quote development, and proposal delivery. The Senior Large Account Commercial Underwriter is expected to achieve profitable retention and growth of large, complex casualty risks with an emphasis on commercial auto, general liability, and umbrella coverage. This position reviews insurance applications to evaluate, classify and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage and pricing. The position's objective is to seek out profitable business opportunities, round out coverage for existing large workers compensation accounts, review risks and determine acceptability. The position is focused on achieving results that positively impact sales and profitability. The items listed below are essential functions of the position unless otherwise stated Position Responsibilities: * Establish underwriting guidelines for risk selection, coverage determination, product development, program design, and pricing approaches for commercial automobile, general liability, and commercial umbrella lines of business. * Underwriting responsibility to manage a renewal book of business and be the lead underwriter in building out a large account appetite and book of business for the organization, focusing growth efforts in commercial automobile, general liability, and commercial umbrella coverage(s). * Responsible to identify and transact "cross sell" opportunities for existing Workers' Compensation renewal business in compliance with corporate risk selection guidelines. * Responsible for profitability of individual account performance and book management for commercial automobile, general liability, and commercial umbrella coverage(s). Responsibility includes but is not limited to; implementation and management of effective pricing and underwriting strategies, development and negotiation of price, coverage, terms and conditions for all new business and renewals while coordinating quote development, proposal delivery, account management activities, and develop effective sales strategies in coordination with Workers' Compensation underwriters. * Effectively manage quotation process within individual authority guidelines and effectively collaborate with corporate disciplines such as claims, safety and loss, audit, and executive management. This includes individual account management or referral activities. * Determine the acceptability, quality, pricing, profitability and opportunity for new and existing business. * Promote corporate capabilities with respect to commercial automobile, general liability, and commercial umbrella coverage(s) with key production sources. * Build, maintain and manage successful producer relationships to achieve retention and new business objectives. * Meet with new and renewal customers, individually or as part of a team, to make sales presentations and negotiate coverage, price, financial terms and service delivery. * Identify underwriting issues; recommend and develop plans for problem resolution and implement where appropriate. * Non-essential function: other duties as assigned. Required Skills * Strong background in risk analysis. * Demonstrated technical expertise and product knowledge in commercial lines insurance. * Proven ability to successfully negotiate on all levels and develop producer relationships. * Highly motivated, results oriented individual with solid business acumen. * Excellent communication, organization and presentation skills. * Demonstrated strong writing skills with an emphasis on advertising or marketing. * Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the insurance industry. * Ability to be creative and entrepreneurial in the approach to sales and marketing initiatives. * Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, demanding workload, and tight timelines while meeting established guidelines. * High-level interpersonal, oral communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. * Critical thinking: Ability to assess an individual situation and select applicable rules from an array of options, resulting in the most appropriate and sustainable decision. * Thorough working knowledge of policy and procedures regarding risk administration and risk management; underwriting and loss control. * Thorough knowledge of the insurance industry and the business environment in which it operates in order to develop an effective business strategy and remain technically current. * Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment. * Ability to initiate, build and maintain effective working relationships and tailor services to meet customer needs. * Ability to use sound logic and decision-making skills to identify complex problems, analyze alternatives, then develop and implement effective solutions. * Ability to effectively plan and lead meetings: ensure an agenda is created, appropriate materials are ready in advance, the meeting stays on task, the client's issues are addressed, and follow-up action plans are noted. * Ability to present ideas and information to individuals and groups in a clear, concise, influential, organized and diplomatic manner and address concerns or needs. * Proficient in electronic mail system; use of intranet and internet; Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word. * Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. * Must hold a valid driver's license. Required Experience * Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university strongly preferred. * Preferred minimum of ten years' underwriting experience in the Property & Casualty insurance market with demonstrated experience in large, complex, and loss sensitive accounts. * Preference may be shown for applicants with CPCU and/or ARM designation(s).
