Employee will be assigned to the Division of Water and Waste Management, Watershed Assessment Branch, Watershed Assessment Section. At the full-performance level, employee will perform complex technical and biological work and assist higher level specialists and analysts in support of the Watershed Assessment Branch. Duties are statewide, require field work and office related work. Will serve as lead worker to perform site selection, data collection, data analysis, and data presentation of the statewide lakes monitoring program. Lakes monitoring activities may include water quality sampling, depth profiles, in-lake and riparian habitat assessments, aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling, and bathometric and retention time studies. Other lakes and related duties will include coordinating with U.S. EPA to participate in the national lakes assessment. Employee will perform duties associated with West Virginia's Harmful Algal Blooms Response Plan in order to address Harmful Algal Blooms (HABS) in West Virginia's recreational waters and to protect people and wildlife from toxins produced by cyanobacteria. Primarily, HAB duties will include sampling when harmful algal blooms are reported, training others on sampling protocols, and providing outreach to the public about HAB's. Other duties will include performing stream assessments to support the programmatic needs of both the watershed assessment and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) sections. Stream assessments involve the collection of data documenting the physical and chemical properties of water, riparian and instream habitat conditions, watershed activities and disturbances, and the collection and preservation of biological samples in the form of bacteria, algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish. Office duties will include data entry and QA/QC of data, assisting with data analysis and reporting, summarizing data, and creating tables and graphic output for reporting.
*Successful candidates must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle*; be able to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in rugged terrain; be able to read and interpret topographic maps and use global positioning systems to navigate to sites. Experience in the use of personal computers, specifically Microsoft office, Google Workspace and ESRI ARCGIS applications is desired. Applicants with experience in trailering and operating small boats and small watercraft is desired. Be capable of carrying 25 pounds of equipment over a variety of terrain (including stream crossings) and in varying weather conditions in all seasons. Field duties will require overnight travel up to four nights per week.

*Minimum Qualifications*

*Training: * Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.


*Substitution: * Additional full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience as described below may substitute for the required training at the rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of training.


*Experience: * Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in the acquisition, preservation, protection and enhancement of environmental resources, or in environmental protection, or in an agency specific area related to environmental impact.


*Substitution: * Graduate coursework from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience at the rate of fifteen (15) semester hours of training for every one (1) year of experience.

Pay: $38,157.00 - $70,589.00 per year
