Nature of Work

WorkForce WV/Unemployment Compensation/UC Audit & Compliance/Statewide-Unemployment Compensation Division-UC Audit & InvestigationsEP Tax Examiners are positions within the Field Audit section of Unemployment Compensation. This area investigates employers through several different medians and cross matches to ensure that employers are reporting all employees accurately to the Unemployment Compensation Tax section, submitting contribution report forms and understanding how the unemployment law effects their operations. Each Tax Examiner is responsible for the following functions--this position will review and analyze records provided by employers about missing or incomplete records, as well as any differences found. This process will also include gathering and reviewing various information from sources in preparation for the audit, such as UCTax, websites like WV Secretary of State's Office, WV Tax, Onbase, etc. This position will utilize computer systems adopted by the agency to audit employers. These particular tools include e-mail, Word (including mail merge for correspondence), Excel, and FARM, which is the current computerized auditing program used. This position will be required to know the laws, regulations/policies associated with an unemployment tax account and apply the principles to conduct FUTA and general auditing assignments. The audit assignments associated with this will require this position to not only apply the laws and regulations governing employer tax accounts, but also require the examiner to research and interpret applicable data from the employers records. In addition, this position must have the ability to prepare a complete audit including the essential documentation and final report. This position will also be required to complete FUTA audit assignments as well as work on some completed FUTA crossmatch cases. The most complex duty for this position will be how to discern whether the wages paid by the employer are countable as wages or should not be used for the audit. It is critical that the EP Examiner distinguish between what was provided and how the policies and laws view the wages being investigated. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with at least twelve (12) semester hours in accounting.


Substitution: In addition to the bachelor's degree, full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in professional accounting or auditing work may be substituted for the twelve (12) required semester hours in accounting at the rate of three (3) semester hours in accounting for one (1) year of experience.


Experience: One (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in accounting or auditing work.


Substitution: Master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience. Certification or registration as a public accountant in West Virginia may be substituted for the training and required experience.
