The Director, DRG is responsible for providing oversight, training,
and leadership of the DRG Integrity Specialists, identify training
needs and deliver training from both an on-boarding and
cross-training perspective. The Director, DRG will also ensure
staffing models are accurate based on volume, productivity
expectations, and provides education to the DRG Team based on
quality output captured through acute, inpatient audits.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensures compliance with external agencies and state and federal
regulations for ethical coding
- Maintains, and implements policies and procedures; evaluates
and improves the effectiveness of policies and procedures and
workflow
- Coordinates work assignments of system wide coding staff and
adjusts as needed based on schedules and volumes
- Monitors productivity levels and turn-around time while
assessing current Tower productivity standards and developing a
strategic plan to improve organizational effectiveness
- Maintains DRG Team staff employee files and tracks annual
performance evaluations
- Monitors backlogs for all customers and initiates action where
necessary based on key performance indicators
- Identifies and implements improvement measures that will
enhance Tower quality and productivity as well as client
satisfaction
- Supports the process and workflow, training, and education of
the remote and on-site DRG staff
- Assists Leadership with execution and compilation of specific
reports
- Identifies patterns, trends and variations in coding data and
takes appropriate steps in collaboration with departments to effect
resolution or explanation of the variance
- Ensures that information systems support current and future
needs of the department. Works closely with information technology
in transition planning including, but not limited to, testing,
installation and education of staff to produce and maintain high
quality coding and data integrity
- Monitors the initiation, revision, and implementation of
external regulations, statutes, and standards; facilitates
implementation of revised regulations; ensures compliance
- Analyzes internal quality reviews, makes recommendations for
education, counseling, or termination for staff as appropriate.
Review provisions for staff development, training, and orientations
as prescribed by customers and any internal departmental
standards
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Management, Healthcare
Administration, Health Information Management or other related
field(s) requiredLicensure and/or Credentials:
- Coding credential required from AHIMA/AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS,
CPC and/or CIC)
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of work experience in the Health Information
Managements (HIM) field
- Minimum of 5 years Inpatient coding experience
- Extensive knowledge of revenue cycle management and coding
services
- Extensive operational knowledge of hospital revenue cycle
- Requires good interpersonal and customer service skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of both MS and APR-DRGs, ICD-10-CM and
ICD-10-PCS
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer technology and preferred
knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Highly motivated, self-directed and able to work independently
with minimal supervision
- Analytical ability to gather and interpret data to identify
areas of opportunity, problems, or issues and apply sound
judgement
- Leadership skills that demonstrate accountability,
decision-making, coaching and counseling
- Ability to interpret coding quality audit data, track and trend
the audit results, and convert into applicable education
- Strong written and verbal skills
- Experience with electronic health records and health
information systems
- Ability to organize and set priorities to ensure that
objectives are met in a timely manner
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships with staff at every level of the organization
- Ability to oversee seven-day Tower operations including but not
limited to scheduling, work distribution, productivity monitoring,
and quality output
- Ability to use a PC in a Windows environment, including MS
Word
- Independent, focused individual able to work remotely or
on-site
